It allows you to take control of their nutrition and ensures they receive quality ingredients. When you opt for homemade chicken feed, you’re saying goodbye to processed pellets that may have lost their nutritional value long before reaching your coop.Whole grains in your homemade feed retain their nutrients, offering real food that chickens can digest effectively. This leads to less waste and better nutrient absorption. You'll find that your flock eats less overall, which is a sign they’re getting more from every bite.Adjusting your chickens' diet according to the season is not just a nice option; it’s essential. In winter, your hens need energy-dense food to keep warm. Conversely, lighter feed supports their active foraging lifestyle in summer.Understanding how seasons impact your chickens' dietary needs is vital for being a caring chicken keeper. By making homemade chicken feed, you also connect with a community that values natural, wholesome care for their birds. Taking control of your chicken feed is one of the most rewarding parts of backyard chicken keeping. Whole grains provide more usable nutrients, leading to healthier chickens. A homemade chicken diet helps you avoid unwanted additives like soy. Every day you feed your flock a homemade diet, you're investing in their long-term health. Nutritional Needs of Chickens Throughout the YearUnderstanding the nutritional needs of our feathered friends is crucial for their health. Just like us, chickens require a balanced diet to thrive. The key nutrients they need include protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Each of these plays a significant role in their overall well-being.Key Nutrients: Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, and MineralsProtein is the star of the show—laying hens need a diet with at least 16 to 18 percent protein to maintain consistent egg production. You can provide this protein through: Plant-based grains like wheat and oats Animal-based options like fish meal for an extra boost Carbohydrates from corn, millet, and barley give your chickens the daily energy they need to scratch, forage, and lay those beautiful eggs. Healthy fats are also crucial because they help your birds absorb essential vitamins like A, D, E, and K. Fatty acids, especially linoleic acid found in sunflower seeds and vegetable oils, contribute to glossy feathers and overall vitality.Seasonal Dietary Changes: Winter vs. Summer RequirementsSeasonal shifts mean adjusting the balance of these nutrients. In winter, your chickens need more energy-dense feed to keep warm. Conversely, lighter fare supports their active foraging lifestyle in summer. A well-rounded chicken diet takes into account both macrominerals and trace microminerals for complete nutritional support.Supplemental Minerals and Vitamins for Optimal HealthCalcium is non-negotiable for laying hens—without enough of this mineral, you'll notice thin-shelled eggs or even egg binding. We always recommend offering supplemental minerals like oyster shells free-choice so each chicken can consume what her body needs. Vitamins play a quiet but vital role in your flock's health, supporting everything from bone growth to stress resistance during hot weather. When you master the nutrient profile of your homemade feed, you'll see the results in vibrant, active chickens and richly colored egg yolks.Winter Blend Chicken Feed: Ingredients and Nutritional FocusAs winter approaches, it's time to rethink your flock's diet. The cold months can be tough on your chickens, and a well-crafted winter blend is essential. This blend should focus on high-energy grains and seeds that provide the necessary calories to keep your flock warm and healthy.High-Energy Grains and Seeds for Cold WeatherWhen temperatures drop, your winter blend chicken feed needs to work harder. We focus on high-energy grains like whole corn and wheat because they provide the dense calories your chickens burn just to stay warm. Corn is a fantastic winter feed ingredient—it's low in protein but packed with energy and fat.Black oil sunflower seeds are one of our favorite winter additions. They are rich in oils that give feathers a gorgeous gloss and provide lasting energy. Oats bring a wonderful balance of protein, B vitamins, and fiber to your winter recipe, supporting digestion during the colder season. We also like to include barley in small amounts for variety, but we make sure not to overdo it since it's lower in protein than other grains.Incorporating Protein and Fat Sources for Winter HardinessProtein remains essential in winter. Your hens are still laying eggs, and they need adequate protein from sources like fish meal or lentils. Healthy fats from sunflower seeds and flax seeds help your chickens maintain body condition and process fat-soluble vitamins efficiently.Including these protein sources ensures your flock stays strong and healthy through the cold months. Remember, a well-balanced diet is key to vibrant, active chickens.Recommended Supplements: Oyster Shells, Grit, and KelpTo further enhance your winter blend, consider adding supplements. Kelp is a powerhouse we never skip; it delivers trace minerals, amino acids, and salt that support egg production and overall vitality. Oyster shells offered free-choice ensure each hen gets the calcium she needs for strong eggshells, even on the coldest day.Grit is essential when feeding a whole grain winter blend. Your chickens need it to grind those hearty grains in their gizzards. Sourcing quality ingredients from your local feed store or online retailers ensures you have the best selection for your homemade chicken feed.Taking the time to craft a thoughtful winter homemade chicken feed recipe means you'll collect beautiful eggs all season long. Make sure to store your winter blend in airtight containers to preserve nutrients and keep pests away from your precious grains.Summer Blend Chicken Feed: Ingredients and Nutritional FocusAs the days grow longer and warmer, it’s essential to adjust your flock’s diet. During summer, chickens are more active and enjoy foraging for bugs and weeds. This means their feed can be lighter and more varied to complement their natural foraging habits.Lighter Grains and Seeds to Support Active ForagingWe adapt our summer blend to include less corn and more diverse grains. This helps provide sustained energy without overheating your flock. Here are some key ingredients to consider: Millet: A fantastic warm-weather grain rich in amino acids and iron. Soft white wheat berries: A gentler energy source compared to heavier winter grains. Kamut: This grain boasts 18 percent protein and essential nutrients like magnesium and vitamin E. Sesame seeds: Known for their high protein content, around 25 percent. Lentils: Another great protein source, with at least 26 percent protein. Adjusting Protein and Carbohydrate Levels for Warm WeatherDuring the summer, you can slightly reduce the overall protein in your chickens' diet. They naturally supplement their intake by foraging for protein-rich insects. However, including options like sesame seeds and lentils can help ensure picky eaters in your flock still get enough protein.Feeding Tips to Complement Foraging and TreatsSummer is a great time to offer your flock kitchen scraps like vegetable cuttings and fruit peels. These healthy treats can enhance their diet, but they should only make up a small part of their overall feed. Always remember to avoid harmful foods like: Avocados Dried beans Rhubarb Excess salt Caffeinated products It’s also important to provide free-choice access to oyster shells and grit year-round. This supports calcium needs and aids in proper digestion. A well-balanced summer diet keeps your flock active, happy, and productive, even on the hottest days. How to Make DIY Chicken Feed Recipes: A Step-By-Step GuideLet’s dive into the exciting world of crafting your own chicken feed. Making your own feed is not only rewarding but also beneficial for your flock's health. With a little planning and the right ingredients, you can create a nutritious blend that meets your chickens' needs.Gathering quality ingredients is the first and most exciting part of making your own chicken feed. We love sourcing grains from Azure Standard, a fantastic co-op that delivers bulk organic grains right to your door anywhere in the country. For local feed options, check out stores like WinCo Foods or Market of Choice. They often have excellent bulk sections with fresh whole grains.Your neighborhood feed store is perfect for basics like oats, wheat, and corn, while a local grain mill can offer freshly ground options. When you're ready to mix, combine all your grains, seeds, and supplements in a large bucket or clean metal trash can for easy blending.Proper storage is one of the most important parts of maintaining feed quality. Store your homemade feed in airtight containers in a cool, dark place to keep nutrients intact and pests out. Weevils and rodents will find your grains if you're not careful!Transitioning your flock to a homemade feed takes patience. Start by mixing a small amount of whole grains into their current feed. Gradually increase the amount of homemade feed each week so your chickens' gizzards have time to adapt to grinding whole grains.Always offer free-choice grit during the transition. This is non-negotiable since chickens need grit to process whole grains properly. Don’t be alarmed if egg production dips for a short time during the switch; this is completely normal and temporary. You might notice your chickens picking out certain grains first. Trust their instincts, as they often know what nutrients their bodies need. The whole process takes a few weeks, but once your flock is fully transitioned, you'll see the benefits in their health and egg quality. We find that mixing a new batch of feed every couple of weeks becomes a satisfying ritual, like garden therapy for chicken keepers. Whether you choose to mix a large batch all at once or scoop and mix each day, find the way that works best for your routine. Things like a flexible bucket and a dedicated scoop make the mixing process quick and enjoyable, even for a small flock.Benefits and Considerations of Using DIY Chicken Feed RecipesThe choice to create your own feed can significantly impact your chickens' well-being. Making homemade chicken feed is not just about saving money; it’s about enhancing the quality of your flock's diet. Let’s explore the benefits and considerations of this rewarding endeavor.First, let’s talk numbers. A quality homemade chicken feed can cost around $0.69 per pound, which is right in line with premium commercial options. In contrast, store-bought feed can range from $0.38 to $3.00 per pound, depending on the brand and quality. This means that homemade feed sits comfortably in the middle, offering superior ingredients without breaking the bank. We've found that buying grains in bulk from places like Azure Standard or splitting 50-pound bags with fellow chicken keepers brings costs down even further. The real value of homemade chicken feed isn't just in the price—it's in knowing exactly what goes into every single meal your flock eats. You have complete control over ingredient quality, which means no hidden soy, no preservatives, and no questionable fillers in your chickens' diet. An unexpected benefit is that many of the whole grains you buy for your chickens can also be used in your own cooking and baking. However, your local feed store might not carry everything you need. Combining local feed sources with online ordering gives you the best of both worlds. We won't sugarcoat it—there are challenges to making your own chicken feed. Finding the right equipment and sourcing ingredients consistently can be tricky.Assessing the exact nutrient content of your homemade recipe can also be challenging. Using a feed calculator helps take the guesswork out of the process. For small backyard flocks, homemade feed is especially practical because you're not dealing with massive quantities.Store-bought feed does offer convenience and uniform nutrition in every pellet, which is worth considering if your schedule is packed. The pelletizing process used in commercial feed can improve digestibility, but we believe the freshness of whole grains outweighs this advantage.Incorporating food scraps into your homemade feed is a wonderful way to reduce waste and give your chickens variety in their daily meals. Make sure to do your own economic evaluation based on local ingredient costs and the amount of time you can dedicate to mixing feed.Ultimately, the choice to feed chickens a homemade diet is personal. We're here to support you whichever way you decide to go.Customizing Feed Recipes for a Healthy, Happy Flock Year-RoundAdjusting your birds' diet allows you to respond to their needs and preferences throughout the year.
